Kiln-dried for absorbency
Shavings are kiln-dried to a moisture content of 8–13% — dry enough to soak up what your animals leave behind, which keeps stables and sheds drier for longer between changes.
Tumut NSW · Est. 2002
Kiln-dried radiata pine, screened and dust-extracted and packaged into 14kg bales. Stocked by produce stores and pet retailers in every state of Australia.
The product
We do one thing: premium pine shavings for animal bedding. Every bale is kiln-dried, screened and dust-extracted before it's packaged into 14kg bales.
Shavings are kiln-dried to a moisture content of 8–13% — dry enough to soak up what your animals leave behind, which keeps stables and sheds drier for longer between changes.
Three screens, not one. A star screen takes out the oversize pieces, a rotary trommel pulls the sawdust and fines, and a final stage lifts the airborne dust before the shavings reach the baler.
No chemical additives, just radiata pine shavings from kiln-dried timber. Suited for horses, poultry and small animals (from rats and rabbits to reptiles).
Our Tumut plant sits in the heart of NSW softwood country. Shavings go from the mill into our baler with minimal handling.
How it's made
Shavings are a by-product of milling kiln-dried radiata pine — timber that's already been dried for structural use.
Three screens in sequence — oversize, then sawdust and fines, then airborne dust — leaving only the coarse, absorbent shavings curl.
Pressed into 14kg bales that expand to approx. 0.18 m³ uncompressed. Dense to freight, easy to store.
Who it's for
Low-dust bedding for stables and floats — comfortable underfoot, quick to muck out, kind on airways.
Dry, absorbent litter for coops, nesting boxes and sheds — from chooks in the backyard to commercial operations.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and reptiles — a natural, additive-free substrate sold through pet retailers nationally.

Since 2002
Superior Shavings started baling in Holbrook, NSW in 2002. In 2019 we moved the plant to Tumut, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and one of the biggest softwood milling regions in the country.
Today we're part of the Breeder's Choice Woodshavings family, alongside our sister plant in Colac, Victoria. Two plants, two states, the same standard: kiln-dried, screened, dust-extracted pine — and nothing else.
